Olivia Lesbian Cruises: A Photo Scrapbook

The Pinnacle Grill, a steak and seafood restaurant, was our favorite of the three. We ordered Caprese salads, which were excellent, followed by mushroom ravioli, which was a little too heavy, but not bad. What made the meal really memorable was the sunset over the ocean right outside our window, enhanced by generous wine flights (for which we paid extra).

We caught performances by old-school lesbian faves Suede, Diane Davidson and Sweet Baby Jai on the main stage and a late night Zoe Lewis show up in the Crow's Nest Lounge. Lewis was one of the musical highlights of the week for me, with her jazzy, gypsy-ish performance that translated really well to a live bar show. We were bummed to miss ex-Ani DiFranco bandmate Julie Wolf, but there seemed to be at least one too many things going on at any given moment. Olivia cruisers took karaoke extremely seriously, with at least one professional singer in the room and comedians Julie Goldberg and Mimi Gonzalez as the celebrity MC's. Singing cheesy love songs with all the pronouns appropriately changed was just another of the small joys of being in an all gay-girls group. We heard "Redneck Woman" and "Goodbye Earl" at least once each night -- by night three, we groaned every time we heard the opening notes.

Royal Caribbean has been particularly proactive in its efforts to attract LGBTQ customers. It was the first cruise line to appoint an openly gay Diversity Executive and produced a groundbreaking commercial promoting its wedding services featuring a same-sex couple. Popular organizers of gay group cruises include Pied Piper Travel, Aquafest, Meet Me On Board and Al and Chuck Travel.

As is common with any chartered cruise, the tour operators also plan specialized entertainment, events and excursions that are unique to their particular cruise. It is very common to have top Broadway performers, comedians and drag queens as part of the entertainment line-up on all-gay cruises. The special programming is also why the price of all-gay cruises is often significantly higher than that of a standard cruise. The concept of an exclusive, all-gay chartered cruise on a major cruise line was a groundbreaking concept when RSVP Vacations organized its first such cruise, setting sail in 1986 voyage with 750 guests. Today, nearly every major cruise line has hosted all-gay sailings. All of the large cruise lines have actively engage with tour operators like RSVP Vacations to charter out their newest and largest ships for this growing market.

Other exciting perks were the fluffy bathrobes, the iPod dock and the flat screen TV with a menu of DVD's that we could have delivered to the room. Nieuw Amsterdam accommodations gave us very little to complain about. The main attraction of our cabin was a nice-sized verandah that overlooked the Caribbean Sea. Our stateroom had a comfy queen bed and sitting area with a love seat and coffee table, making good use of the small space. Lunch was a carnivore-/vegan-friendly assortment of Caribbean salads, barbecued meats and veggie burgers. We were eating, shaded by covered picnic tables, fluffy feral chicks nibbling at our crumbs beneath the table, when Maebh's attention was piqued.
RSVP has been around since 1986 and travels to many different destinations, including the Caribbean and Alaska. While all-male gay cruises evoke the stereotype of young men, hot bodies, all-night parties and short-lived hookups, we quickly learned why this Olivia cruise attracted a different demographic. In addition to the pricy cruise fares, much stems from the origins of Olivia Cruises, a company that began life in the early '70's as a lesbian record label in D.C.

She recalls a heartwarming exchange with the captain when he – to reassure her – asked her where Sappho was from, the ancient poet having written of her love for women. “I hesitated,” says Dlugacz, “and he said, ‘The isle of Lesbos [from where the word “lesbian” is derived], and that is where I am from. Henrietta has now traveled six times with Olivia, the world’s first travel company for lesbians. For Row, the company takes away that “extra precaution” the couple otherwise has to take on holiday as a same-sex couple.
Best Cruise Lines for LGBTQ Cruisers
For history, culture and a good dose of high-energy fun, this is an awesome summertime gay cruise option. Pied Piper Cruises is the premier agency for LGBTQ group cruises, serving the LGBTQ community for over 32 years! You’ll have more fun and will never be alone when you are in the comfort of your own group environment. You can relax in knowing that Pied Piper will have it all arranged for you before you board your ship. All Pied Piper LGBTQ group cruises are subject to minimum participation. All Olivia trips—whether big cruises and resorts, intimate riverboat and luxury trips, or off-the-beaten-track adventure tours—are created specifically for our community.
Part of the Gay & Lesbian Cruisers forum includes an area for posting a "Roll Call" announcement. This is a way of finding other LGBTQ travelers who may be sailing on your cruise prior to departure. In addition, Royal Caribbean's sister cruise line Celebrity has been a major sponsor of Pride celebrations in Miami Beach and on GayTravel.com. Celebrity was also the first to host a same-sex wedding at sea in 2018 following Malta's vote to legalize same-sex marriages.
We’re dedicated to creating the absolute best value for you in every way. If you’ve been a part of the RSVP family for years, we can’t wait to show you all that’s new. Cruise lines couldn't be happier about the progress, today seeking out LGBTQ cruisers as a particular market niche. Entire ships are now are chartered exclusively by LGBTQ passengers. You can go to the pool, gym, spa, bar, and many other parts of a cruise ship. There is plenty of LGBTQ programming and entertainment on the boat, like drag performances and circuit parties.
There are multiple pools, bars, a casino, a spa, and various dining options. The ship also hosts several special events and circuit parties, including the White Party and Disco Tea Dance, explicitly geared towards the gay and lesbian community. Some of the most popular events are the White Party, in which partygoers dress up with angel wings and white jocks, and Dog Tag T-Dance, in which men dress in camouflage. In the decades since, Olivia Travel has built up a loyal customer base, particularly among professional women in their 30s and older. “Olivia, as a brand, as a company, is so strongly about the female experience,” says Dlugacz.
If you only have a day in Curacao, this is a nice, easily accessible place to eat, drink and swim during the day, and party in the evening when the D.J.'s show up. Tamarind, the top-floor Pan-Asian restaurant, had excellent service, stunning views and served food that I'd describe as good but not memorable. Canaletto serves Italian cuisine and was, frankly, awful -- we each ended up with a plate of some sort of straight-from-the-box noodles in a heavy cream sauce. Overall, I'd advise sticking to the options of the Lido buffet until you find you're too burned out from eating with 2,000 of your closest shipmates each night. We ate most meals from the Lido Deck buffet, as we found the Manhattan Dining Room to be unremarkable.

Since then we have taken nearly 300,000 lesbians and LGBTQ+ women on over 300 vacations around the world. We bring a dedicated team of Olivians on every trip, whose number one goal is to create a safe and welcoming space for you. We had three days entirely at sea, one at the beginning of the trip and two at the very end. There were traditional cruise-ship offerings like steel drumming and ballroom dancing, an always-bumping casino and a beautiful spa -- and then some less-conventional activities like erotic writing workshops. Yet, despite occasionally feeling out of place, we couldn't help also feeling inspired seeing what our generation owes to the women before us. It was sweet to feel that we were part of a continuum of women, of feminists, or lesbians or whatever else we choose to call ourselves.
